Day 2: Two girls one flush

Zero Waste challenge
Here's Day 2 of our Zero Waste Challenge. Jas (The Ginger) and Morgana (The Vegan) are undertaking the Zero Waste Challenge: finding ways to refuse, reuse, reduce, and recycle as much as possible in their lives, and ask you to join them on their journey.

The problem
Newsflash: EVERYBODY PEES. But does everyone need to flush?

The world’s water crisis has recently been put under the spotlight since Cape Town almost declared a “Day Zero” following drought in South Africa. With climate change and population growth increasing the strain on water supplies, water wastage is a serious issue and it often starts in the household.

Research shows that the more you flush, the more money is spent by governments to clean it up. There are probably better uses for your taxes.

The solution
Scenario: you need a wee, you do your thing, flush. Next second, your flatmate/roomie/partner comes along, also needing a wee, and they flush again. Ahh, how could we transform this small everyday occurence into a water-saving solution? Simple. Two girls one flush.

Morgana: “Oh Jas, save it, I need a wee.”
Jas: “Cool, no prob”

And just like that, just under 2 gallons of water (7.5 litres) have been saved. Bosh.

Evaluation
For this challenge, we followed the wisdom of Rick Paulus: “If It’s Yellow, Let It Mellow.” He points out a few simple water-conservation tips that people don’t follow because they find them too gross. Luckily, Morgana and Jas are not fazed by such nonsense.

Water flush toilets are seen as a pinnacle of human progress in hygiene and convenience. Yes, obviously, they have been an incredible invention for society, but the casual nature of flushes shows how much we take current water abundance for granted. Leaving wee in a toilet for half an hour isn't going to kill us.

Sharing the flush is such an easy way to cut down on water waste and now we’ve set our sights even higher: we want to bring on a third player. Please message us if interested.

This is a challenge for everyone: when you next go for a whizz, and someone else is in, it’s always worth asking them if you should “save the flush.” You might think you’re breaking social etiquette, but you’re actually saving the environment.
